As the 250th anniversary of Walter Scott’s birth is marked nationwide, we’re celebrating some of the talented but largely forgotten women writers who were Scott’s contemporaries. We’ll walk the streets of Elizabeth Hamilton’s fictional Scottish village of Glenburnie, immerse ourselves in the best-selling novels of Mary Brunton and dip into the writing of Susan Ferrier, who is sometimes referred to as the Scottish Jane Austen. We’ll look at some of the women who were an important part of Scott’s literary circles. Pull up a chair and discover some fascinating women writers from the past.
