Sir Walter Scott both influenced and was inspired by the beauty of Bowhill, playing a key role in the development of the designed landscape and creation of the Upper Loch, while his famed poem Lay of The Last Minstrel was set in the grounds. As a close friend of the 4th Duke and mentor to the young 5th Duke Walter Francis his influence and unique thinking shaped the house and inspired the family from the early days of his life right up to the present day.
This guided walk explores these connections and influences on the physical and emotional history of Bowhill and the Buccleuch family.
