Walter Scott’s Waverley Novels were a true publishing phenomenon, sometimes described as the Harry Potter of their day. There was great deal of public excitement and speculation about the identity of their author, as a lively rumour mill turned for more than ten years, spanning the release of over twenty novels. Just who was responsible for these books and their intoxicating blend of history, high drama, romance, magic and deeds of derring-do?

This mysterious author who had bewitched a whole generation of readers and theatregoers was given many names, including ‘The Wizard of the North.’

When asked, Scott was always playful and evasive. He would often point towards other possible authors, he used a number of different pseudonyms to hide his identity, and he even attempted to throw fans off the scent byreleasing novels so close together that it was thought they couldn’t be by the same hand!
