With its moat, twin-towered gatehouse and imposing battlements, this awe-inspiring castle is thought to have featured in Sir Walter Scott’s novel Guy Mannering (1815). Although now ruined, Caerlaverock is still a substantial structure visitors can explore and home to a fascinating siege warfare exhibition complete with reconstructions of medieval siege engines.
